When adults choose partners with a large age difference, outsiders often want one explanation.

“It's about money.”

“They just like older people.”

“They are looking for someone younger.”

Sometimes one of those factors matters. Sometimes it does not.

An age difference is a fact about a relationship, not a complete explanation of why two people chose each other.

What can attract people across age differences?

People can be drawn to personality, confidence, kindness, shared interests, emotional maturity, physical attraction, stability or a sense of being understood.

Life circumstances can also matter.

Someone may meet an older partner through work or a community. Someone may meet a younger partner through shared interests or social circles.

There is no single motive that explains every age-gap relationship.

Life stage matters more than the number alone

A ten-year difference can feel very different at different ages.

Two adults who are both established in their lives may have relatively similar expectations about work, independence and relationships.

A much younger adult may be at a very different stage: starting education, building a career or learning how to manage adult finances.

That does not automatically make the relationship unhealthy. It does mean the practical differences deserve an honest conversation.

What about power?

Age can overlap with other forms of power.

One partner may have more money, professional influence, social experience, family authority or control over housing.

The useful question is not simply “How many years apart are they?”

Ask:

Can both people disagree?

Can either person make independent decisions?

Does one partner control the other's money or movement?

Can the younger partner maintain relationships and interests outside the relationship?

Can either person leave without being threatened?

These questions tell you more about power than the age gap alone.

Family reactions can be complicated

Parents may worry about grandchildren, finances or a partner's intentions.

Friends may make jokes.

The couple may feel that nobody takes the relationship seriously.

Sometimes the concern is reasonable. Sometimes it is prejudice or discomfort with something unfamiliar.

The couple can listen to concerns without automatically accepting every conclusion.

A crucial boundary: minors are different

An adult relationship with an adult is not the same category as a romantic or sexual situation involving a minor.

Children and teenagers require safeguarding, and laws concerning minors vary by jurisdiction. This article is about relationships between consenting adults.

The question underneath the age gap

People often ask, “Why would someone choose a partner that much older?”

A more useful question is:

What is happening inside this particular relationship?

Are the people free to choose?

Do they respect each other's boundaries?

Can they discuss money, health, children and the future honestly?

Those answers are more informative than a stereotype.
