Life goals can diverge even after years of genuine compatibility. People change through work, illness, family experiences, values, opportunities, and simply getting older.

Start with the change you can actually see

A couple may have agreed about children, location, career, finances, or lifestyle in their twenties and feel differently years later. The earlier agreement was not necessarily dishonest; circumstances and priorities can change.

Why alignment can change

The difficult part is distinguishing a negotiable preference from a core life direction. Where to spend a holiday may be flexible. Whether to have children, leave a career, or relocate permanently may not be.

A conversation worth having

Start by naming the goal without immediately arguing for a solution. What does each person want? Why has it changed? What are they afraid of losing? Which parts can be negotiated and which cannot?

When the difference needs more than discussion

If the goals genuinely cannot coexist, the painful conclusion may be incompatibility rather than a failure to love each other enough. That distinction can prevent years of blaming.
