Someone who is inconsistent or unavailable can become unusually difficult to stop thinking about. Distance creates uncertainty, and uncertainty can make the mind focus more intensely on the moments of closeness.

What is underneath the reaction

When attention arrives unpredictably, each positive moment can feel especially important. A warm message after days of silence may feel bigger than steady affection would because you were waiting for it. That intensity can be mistaken for proof of exceptional compatibility.

What idealization leaves out

Idealization also fills gaps. When you do not know what a person would be like in ordinary life, the mind can build the missing parts from hope. You may be attached partly to a real person and partly to a version of what the relationship could become.

Bring the whole relationship back into view

Ask what is consistently present, not only what happens at the high points. Do you feel respected, secure, and able to communicate? Are their actions dependable? Would you choose this pattern if it never changed?

When the pattern keeps repeating

If someone repeatedly withdraws to control your attention, pressures you, or uses affection as a reward, focus on the pattern and your boundaries rather than trying harder to earn closeness.
