Why Do Young Adults Feel Alone After Leaving Home?

Leaving home can feel like freedom and loss at the same time. A person may gain independence while losing familiar routines, family conversations and old friendships.

University, work, marriage or migration can remove an entire social ecosystem. A new city may be full of people, but none of them know your history. Friendships and trust have to be rebuilt. Even small routines have to be invented.

Social media can make the transition harder because people see jobs, relationships, weddings and new homes while rarely seeing the quiet room after the photograph. Comparison can create the feeling that everyone else has found their people.

Independence does not remove the need for connection. A weekly call, shared meal, regular walk, community activity or honest friendship can matter more than having a huge social circle.

The first step may simply be: 'I've been feeling more alone than I expected.' That is not failure. It is information about a human need.
